This is to remind members, who have been unlucky to suffer a corrupted disk , that I offer a service to recover the data.

ToppyDiskMedic (TDM) is a windows program that can process a disk taken from a Topfield recorder (a bit like the TopfHDRW program).

TDM is not available for download you need to send your disk to me.

Geoff

Features:

Protects the disk while analysis is performed.

Provides an extensive log about what it finds on the disk and the operations that have been performed by the user (primarily to aid manual analysis of what needs fixing)

Scavenge the disk to identify what each cluster contains (recordings, directories, fsSave data files, taps, mp3s, known tfd files, logos files, MyStuff data files, Font files, Firmware.dat). Scavenging is performed at the cluster level rather than through the visible file system.

Scavenging is optimized to minimize the amount of data read from the disk; this means that it is significantly faster than TopfHDRW.

The Scavenge process generates a summary file of the recordings found and shows whether or not the files are of their expected duration.

Files and Directories identified by the Scavenge process can be recovered (as can those that have been deleted by TDM).

Can recover lost recordings and MyStuff data files. Can also recover other files mentioned in orphan directories.

Can process fsSave snapshots to recover the file system structures (this allows all files to be easily located and restored).

Maintains a context of the disk between runs e.g. files deleted/found in one run can be recovered in a subsequent run. An interrupted scavenge can also be resumed on a subsequent run.

Allows typical file operations that one would expect: Copy files to/from the corrupted disk, Delete/Rename and Move files to a different directory. [edit]Changes to files structures are made solely in memory until the decision is made to commit them. Files cannot be accidentally copied to the disk (it requires positive action to permit writes) [/edit]

Allows file transfers between two directly connected toppy disks.

Reformat the disk

Copy single disk clusters to the PC

Play a recording (to aid identification of content)

Identify Cross Linked files i.e. files that share the same disk areas.

Refresh a disk cluster i.e. read and then rewrite a failing cluster (this can improve performance as it eliminates the need for the disk controller to perform multiple reads of a failing sector - either because the refresh means that the sector becomes readable or because the controller remaps it to a spare sector).

File structure clusters e.g. directories are saved before being overwritten this allows a file system to be rolled back to a known state (used primarily to backout changes)

File operations are performed in execution threads rather than in the main thread (this prevents the user interface hanging while operations are performed). This allows further analysis and/or other files operations to be queued for execution.

+ other things

As of 8th July 2016, I have used TDM to process 21 disks (although one had a hardware problem and was DOA).

Just finished recovering a Seagate ST1000LM024 1 TB disk (2.5" form factor)

This is not a recognized working disk for the toppy but was in use for about 12 months. The disk was originally formatted on a pc (using something other than TopfHDRW) because the toppy wouldn't do it.

The disk had been corrupted more than once but I still managed to recover 570 recordings and the MyStuff data files. Everything else in ProgramFiles was lost or deemed re-loadable (when a recording goes awry, corruption typically occurs because the start of the disk is overwritten - and this is where ProgramFiles usually resides).

After repairing the disk, I installed it in my test toppy (many thanks to andyfras for sourcing me an adapter at short notice) and re-installed MyStuff, fsSave (to simplify any future recovery) and QuickJump.
Recordings played ok but with an occasional glitch on the screen (possibly due to the disk not really being suitable for a toppy?)

Hi Geoff, are you at a stage where you can release this program to public Domain? Would love to have a play with it.

@cawright1

Thanks for your interest.

I've still no intention of releasing it into the public domain. One of my reasons for not releasing is that it gives me an opportunity to see different types of disk corruption. Having said that, I don't receive many disks - although I did repair one recently ( a "repeat customer" - not the same disk!)

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff. I have a TF5810 which just froze. On mains power cycle, it rebooted and showed the HDD as not present. I've replaced the HDD and reinstalled myStuff and the machine appears to be working OK. However, I am left with a disc with my recordings on that I'm unable to retrieve. I've tried TopfHDDoctor but the disc isn't recognised and I then tried TopfHDRW but (unsurprisingly) this cannot see the disc either. Bearing this in mind, might your service be able to recover the recordings and, if so, what do you charge? The disc is a Samsung HA250JC.

The Samsung 2TB drive, model HD103SI, in my TF5800 has failed, the Toppy just restarts when I switch it on. I have tried another drive in the Toppy and it works fine. The drive perform exactly the same in a second Toppy. Are you able to recover the files and reformat the drive? if so what is the cost

I am unable to mount the drive on either Mac of Windows computer? If so what is the cost?
