Have the capacitors been changed in the black toppy? (A failing power supply may be causing a problem with the USB connection)

As previously requested, please post the MyInfo Log files (both toppies)

The MyInfo Log for the silver toppy (above) looks fine apart from the number of channels - suggest you prune some of these (down to 50 TV?) with ChannelOrganiser or TopManager/PcControl/Channel Management.
You also have local channels (LCN 8, 60 and 127) are configured on Mux 29. Local channels are typically broadcast at a low power and could leas to a disk wipe if the signal is poor i.e. Delete all these channels unless you really want them (and you know that you have a good signal on them).

Re the black toppy you didn't say whether or not the capacitors have been changed i.e. is the PSU failing.
Suggest you switch it off for about 20 minutes and then see if it will connect. If so, post the MyInfo log.

Most users with multiple toppies have them set up similarly. Is there a reason why you haven't done this?

Geoff

well I left it off overnight and it went straight into can't see directory mode when I connected it then I tried the silver one and it worked fine so obviously the black one has problems Andyfras put a 1tb disc into it and I can't remember if he did the caps so I suppose next port of call would be him but maybe I'll just run it till it fails? thanks for the interest

If you take this approach it will most likely be terminal as if it is a power supply failure it could well take out something either irreplaceable (such as tuners) or motherboard (expensive). Fixing a PSU is a relatively cheap option.

I did replace the capacitors when I put the 1TB disk in this Toppy.

It may be that the USB chip has failed; they are easily damaged by static. I have replaced them in the past, but as it's a very difficult job and the chip is hard to source, it's no longer cost effective.

Note that if the Toppy is not seeing the disk (due to corruption or a fault), the Toppy will not be visible to a PC, as it's the disk that the PC connects to.

the disk info 466GB is for the silver toppy so Andy the black toppy with the 1TbB is not repairable?

If the black toppy is working then just continue using it (make sure you use ChannelOrganiser if/when you need to retune).

Obviously, if the USB is iffy then you won't be able to use USB to update the toppy. However, what you could do is to take the disk out of the silver toppy and replace with that from the black toppy. Then update the disk, using the silver toppy, before refitting in the black toppy (To avoid shocks, make sure that both toppies have been powered off for at least 2 minutes before removing the covers). It is unlikely that you would need to do this more than once as no one is doing any further development on the toppy i.e. if you have the latest versions of software then nothing should need changing.

The reason I was asking about MyInfo log for the black toppy was that I was trying to see if you had the PruneEPG tap running on it (your forum signature didn't indicate that you were an active MyStuff user).

Should you decide you really need a working USB connector then your best bet might be to try and buy a "diskless" toppy from Andy when he next gets one; you can then fit your current 1 TB disk into it.

Geoff
