a) last night we re chasing "back for dinner". At 9pm, with half still to watch, timers startd to record 2 progs. The rcordig we were watchng went to a blank screeen. I had to stop and start the reording to watch the rest. This happened twice before.
b) this morning I decided to turn off the power of the toppy then in sleep mode. I restarted after 10 min. The first 2 times MS didnt load. The next time I saw "verifying files", I went out of the room, came back to find a message "a timeout has occured. do you want to close down?" I hit No and so far everything seems to be ok.
I will run a disk check this morning when i have time, but what else can i do to diagnose any problems?

If you were chase playing one thing, I don't understand how 2 new timers could possibly have started (unless Back in time for dinner had actually finished recording by then).

The two things I'd check first would be:

  • Have you had all the capacitors replaced in your CPU? (Anything random/unexplained could potentially be an intermittent hardware problem.)
  • How much free memory do you have? (Anything random/unexplained can always be a memory management problem.)

My money in this case is on not enough memory. Results will be entirely unpredictable, because the bit of memory you're pointing to, expecting to find a particular piece of data in, could contain literally any random value, depending on what legitimately got written to it.

See Toppy Memory for more detail, plus information on how to deal with this.

Thanks for your reply.
To clarify, I have a ps for Back In Time at 8 pm and 2 more for 24hrs A&E and Alan Titchmarsh National Trust at 9 pm. I started playing Back In Time at 8.30.
and the next 2 fired off at 9.
My Toppy is an AndyFras purchase, and Im fanatical about emptying the bin,
removing channels I dont watch and searches for finished programs.
Thanks Again,
Pete

Well, assuming you reboot every night (at least), and there's nothing gobbling up memory during use, that looks very healthy, so I'm stumped.

@goodolpete: did you have a usb connection running when the "timeout" happened?

The disk looks fine (suggest upgrade to fsCheck 1.5).

Every now and again I get crashes on the toppy which I attribute to a race condition between MS and the filing system. It typically occurs when entering or leaving the archive "immediately" after deleting or starting to play a recording. Not quite your scenario but I just put in down to something that I have to live with.

Re MS not starting twice at start up, fsCheck indicated that it thinks the disk took a long time to spin up. Should it happen again, check whether any other taps managed to start (TopManager| PcControl| Tap Commander; if none started, PcControl| Show Menus should complain that PcControl is not running). If no taps started, this would imply that the disk either didn't spin up quickly enough or that there is an issue with the disk connection (indicated by an increase in "UDMA CRC Error Count" - currently 55)

I think your "Timeout" message is something generated by MS (I have seen it before) and may be because you haven't responded to a previous MS question (you were out of the room).
Note: my gut feeling is that it was asking you about entering recovery mode as MS had detected that it hadn't closed down cleanly or was interrrupted during startup.

Assuming that all the capacitors have been replaced on the toppy, I think you should just ignore it unless it becomes a regular occurrence.

Geoff
