We're at the limit of my knowledge on this - I don't enter a username as I let FileZilla do the anonymous thing with the login type.

Edit: There's something in here on the same error: http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18781&sid=634309ef0e0404f4bb58e65e29a7758e to do with which library is used.

OK - progress this morning.

I downloaded the statically linked version and ran them - but they still timed out.
Then I removed the udev rules file I'd created and forced udev to reload - and the static version of puppy started working, and the static ftpd woprks as long as it isn't debug mode. The versions of both that I compiled myself still throw the same errors.

Looks like there's something fundamentally different in the way the latest libusb works.

I'll keep plugging away it -sooner or later the static versions may stop working when the kernel and/or filesystem change again.

If you mean libusb1.x (or 2.x?) as opposed to 0.1.x then yes - they do behave differently. Hence the statically-linked version.

Probably not. All of the underlying mechanisms are the same - it was the interface that changed, in particular to make it easier to use asynchronous calls (IIRC).
