My toppy 5800 started formatting the hard drive randomly until now it was infrequent enough to ignore.
Recently it happened again and now I can't install MyStuff. The install fails randomly when doing even the simplest task of creating or renaming folders etc.
The drive is a 1TB Samsung drive but it appears to be okay. No weird clicking etc.
Its getting a bit old now so is it the dreaded power supply?
Voltages are all okay apart from the +15v which appears to be at +16.4v. Is this the problem? |

Fixing PSUs at the first sign of problems saves money in the long run. Otherwise, you just let it get bad enough to potentially permanently damage other components.
Having said that, there is another problem that causes disk wipes when you're recording from channels with poor signal. Making sure you only have channels from a single transmitter and aggressive channel pruning can help with this. But it does sound as though you have a hardware problem in this case. |

Yes, I have noticed the box restarts etc if I get a really bad signal. I have fixed that issue now.
So does the slightly higher voltage indicate a PSU failure? |

I'll leave Andy or somebody else who knows their electronics to answer that one. |

Almost certainly, if your forum join date is indicative of the age of your Toppy.

I'd be interested to see the other voltages, especially 3.3V. |

Other voltages are as follows, HDD still plugged in.
33v = 33v
18v = 17.9v
15v = 16.4v
5v = 4.8v
3.3v = 3.3v
Yup Toppy is as old as my join date. Its done well really. |

The low 5V and high 30V, 17V, 15V (and presumably 8V, 12V and 24V) indicate failed capacitors. The 3.3V has its own regulator, so isn't affected in the same way. |

If you can't fix it, I can vouch for andyfras repairing and returning the psu very quickly (thanks again Andy).

Thanks for your help. I purchased a soldering iron a week or two back for an Arduino based project so I may have a stab at fixing it myself.
Virgin phoned me up the other day offering me a Tivo box for £3 per month. I'm tempted to take them up on the offer and retire the Topfield... |
