Hi All,

I've added 4seven channel to My Favourites and I noticed that the My Favourites list of channels was 'scrambled up'.

When I looked at the file through ftp it no longer had a list of channels in it, but what seemed like EPG timer information:
Code:
000204|201208172225|201208172235|1|BBC London News|||||||*Regional News and Weather* <AC>The latest news, sport and weather from London. [S] Followed by national weather.|News|10|16:9||teletext|||||||/KCI7ZG||40107
000127|201208180125|201208180130|1|Weatherview|||||||<AC>Detailed weather forecast. [S]|News|5|16:9||t

The EPG on the toppy shows only BBC1 and the Food Network channel above it. Rebooting causes duplicate BBC1 channels to be shown.

All other favourites lists look normal both in their file contents and on the toppy.

When I replaced the scrambled My Favourites file from a back up the My Favourites list on the toppy EPG looked correct once more, but this only lasted for a few minutes.

I thought this may be caused because there doesn't seem to be a logo for 4seven. (I am using the latest logos files). Then I deleted 4seven from My Favourites file, but the problem persists.

This is what My Favourites contains before it gets overwritten as above:
Code:
1//BBC1
2//BBC2
3//ITV1
33//ITV1+1
4//Channel4
13//Channel4+1
5//Channel5
6//ITV2
27//ITV2 +1
7//BBC3
9//BBC4
10//ITV3
24//ITV4
28//E4
29//E4+1
14//More4
47//4seven
15//Film4
31//5USA
30//5*
80//BBCNews24
81//BBCParliament
82//SkyNews
85//RussiaTimes
19//Dave
25//DaveJaVu
12//Yesterday
49//FoodNetwork
38//Quest

Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?

That sounds like plain and simple disk corruption. My first thought was that it sounds like the sort (file pointers going wrong) that can stem from memory corruption, but you have plenty of memory on startup, unless it's dropping dramatically later.

You could try forcing a VF&F to see if that helps: Start to record something you don't care about, and then unplug from the mains after about 5 minutes.

It could, of course, be a hardware failure. If your Toppy is 4 years old (or more) as suggested by your join date, then it might be time to replace the capacitors in the PSU if you haven't already. See Toppy Repairs. Note that if it is hardware (PSU), the sooner you fix it the better, before permanent damage is done, either to the drive or to other Toppy components. PSU problems tend to escalate fast.

Thanks Julie,

Your comments had me worried about the health of my toppy ... I had a disk corruption and re-formatted it only a couple of weeks ago.

Some time last year, when I had the first disk corruption on this toppy, I measured the voltages and all were within tolerances. Of course it could have gone bad since. Sad

This is a recently formatted disk, so if it got corrupted again within a week this could point to a problem with the PSU.

I noticed that since last week it takes longer to start, showing C456 for around 10 seconds. I could swear it used to take around 3 seconds only. Is this an indication of a dodgy PSU?

EDIT: I just remembered! I had at least 2 Bad Files showing up in the toppy over the last week. These were recordings that had been programmed (and at least one of them I observed starting up) but were corrupted overnight.

Almost anything "unusual" could point to a dodgy PSU. Given the age of your Toppy, I'd say it's worth a preventative repair anyway - especially as the cost of repair is low and the cost of non-repair is high.

Please note that on newer 5800 PSUs (~<5 years), it's often C25 (if it's green) that fails first. This can upset the processor and cause crashes, but without the voltages measuring out of specification. If this is the case C25 will usually have a 'domed' top (you can see this without removing the case).

Thank you both for your responses.

I checked the green C25 and it is not domed or discoloured yet.

I put the toppy through its paces yesterday to see why the My Favourites was being overwritten by EPG timer data and at some point it started crashing with 'Out of memory: 14' errors when I would try to bring up EPG.

This error led me to this thread. As suggested there I found that the 'My Favourites.mcl' file had grown to a size of megabytes. I deleted it, then restored a fresh 'My Favourites.mcl' from a back up. I rebooted and have had no problems with it yet. After a dozen recordings and an update with rt2mei I've had no more corruptions. This is really weird, because the back up file that I restored is the same I had used the last four times when it kept being over-written with EPG timers data.

I am at a loss as to why this happened, but hope that it won't come back! Smile

I'd guess that your enormous favourites file is just another symptom of the same underlying disk corruption problem. I'd put money on the fact that the FAT entry was actually pointing to something else entirely.

The thing is this disk was corrupted 3-4 weeks ago. I reformatted it (twice) and started afresh. So I thought that the reformatting would have dealt with the corruption.

What I did not do is run a smartmontools test to see if it fails and also format the drive on a PC first, to make sure it is checked and any bad blocks marked and excluded from the filesystem.

I refer the honourable gentleman to my earlier reply.

You may also need to replace the drive.

Thank you Julie, I have not ignored your earlier reply. Indeed I have planned to preventatively replace the capacitors at the earliest opportunity (which may not be as soon as I would like).

I do hope though that I won't need to replace the drive - it has seen less than a years use. Sad
