I've recently installed a 500Gb PATA WD5000AVJB after my previous WD3200AVJB developed a problem. Since installing it, I've noticed that the Toppy seems to pause for a couple of seconds when switching views in MyStuff, which didn't happen with either the original disk or the 320Gb replacement. I had the caps replaced by andyfras a couple of years ago, so I assume it's not a PSU problem.
Is it just the Toppy working harder to manage a bigger disk, or are there any settings on the disk I should be reviewing? I set the quietness to "medium", but should I set it to the less aggressive setting? |

Show us your MyInfo log and we'll tell you .
The most obvious thing to check is whether you've got IA switched on (which is the default).
The other thing to check is your MyStuff setting for
T1: Exclusive Mode

T1 Exclusive mode should be aggressive (if that's the correct term), but I'll check. I'll have to steal the laptop off my daughter once she's finished her homework before I can get the MyInfo log.
I've had another thought since posting the original: I copied over all my MS settings from the old disk using TopfHDRW. Now I know that TopfHDRW has the odd problem with small files, and the corrupt disk might have had an issue with some of the originals, so I checked a selection in excel as you suggested, but I wasn't going to check all 500+! Could a rogue MS file cause an issue, and is there any way of finding it if it is? |

If you've got 500, either they're old .mei files that haven't been used since MS 6.0 was released, or they're backups of current config files, and you don't need more than the most recent <n> (where n is a small number) of them. Historically, MS has been very good at generating backups, but has never deleted any (this will change in MS 6.5).
Your main config files are
Config
MyStuff.dat (binary, so can't be checked with a spreadsheet)
Recordings
MyStuffRecordedInfo.dat
MyStuff_MOTList.dat
Searches
MyStuff_Searches.dat
MyStuff_Excludes.dat
MyStuff_EpisodeExcludes.dat
MS does use other files, of course, such as your skin, your favourites files, etc. You can find a list of them in the appendices of the manual.
My own 5800, with a 1.5TB drive does occasionally take some time to respond, although I haven't really taken any notice of when.
Is it sluggish for particular functions? And if so, if you repeat the same thing, is it slow the second time around?

Sorry for the delay in replying, but I've been laid low with something which eventually broke at 4am this morning... Hope this makes sense.
The problem seems to be getting better, with bouts of slowness becoming less frequent, though still happening 3-4 times a day. I've done a quick review of the MS files from the backup of my dodgy disk. I've 166 MyStuff.dat.datetime files dating back to 5/9/10 and 821 MyStuff_Searches.dat.datetime files dating back to 8/9/11. Perhaps I should be trimming those

I don't imagine they'll make any difference to general responsiveness though.Quote: Sig details deleted Sig details are useful - they summarise your patches in terms of recommended firmware. Having said that, I can't see anything desperately unusual there, except 466 GB seems a bit short of 500GB (even allowing for 1000 vs 1024).

You can delete channel 303 on Tx 24
You have 76 deleted files - when will these be deleted from the recycle bin?
Although they are marked as deleted, they still require cpu to process them every now and then. Suggest you check that the recycle bin will delete them after 7 ( say) days.
MyInfo log indicates that you have 27 directories for recordings; for TopManager, I reckon it takes about 0.5 seconds to process the files in a directory. I know someone will say theuy have lots more directories but it might make a miniscule improvement if you delete the 5 empty ones.
Cheers

You might also want to check that all your MS searches are still relevent.

Basically, everything related to MyStuff in Toppy Memory will have an effect on performance as well as memory.

Thanks for the replies. Still a bit woozy but feeling so much better
@juwlz
I'll go through and delete those 1,000-odd files, which should make some difference. The reason I deleted the signature stuff was that I put it into my signature
@GB I have no plans for the deleted files, I'm afraid. I used to run the 160Gb disk with a 10% threshold on the recycle bin and leave MyStuff to sort it out. I haven't really considered how I should handle things with 3x the disk size. I'm happy to put a time limit on the bin, if people think that will improve things. I wonder how people with 2Tb disks cope |

I have a 1.5TB disk in my 5800. I used be the one in the MyStuff team who always found the test cases for the disk getting nearly full (actually I still do, but it's now on a test machine with a small drive). On all my machines I have
Recycle Bin
N1: Use Recycle Bin=Yes
N2: AutoDelete period=8 days
N3: AutoDelete low disk space=10 %
I haven't hit the 10% on the 1.5TB drive yet!

I do not and never have used the recycle bin, I see little use for it. You either want your recordings or you don't and it doesn't seem to much hard work to delete those that you don't. Just have a little "house" clean once and a while. |

@per-Sony-fied
As most programmes are now repeated or available on different media, the need for a recycle bin is perhaps not as great as it used to be.
However, as it is very easy to set up, and automatic in operation, why not use it? I have found it useful for:-
1) Recovering recordings that I have accidently deleted (finger trouble)
2) Restoring a recording fo a member of the family who is visiting
3) Simplifying the clean up of recordings (I don't have to worry about whether or not to keep a recording as I have a "few" days should I change my mind).
(I'm sure you have used the recycle bin on your pc)
Anyway, each to their own - I'm sure MyStuff would be much easier to maintain if it had fewer options but then it wouldn't be the great product that it is.

Two minor points - if you're using the Emley Moor transmitter, then Ch 24 shouldn't be listed.
Also I would guess that you're not needing 24 radio channels, so delete all the ones you never use. |
