The 5810 that I am currently using has started freezing, locking up, vertifying files endlessly etc, etc. I have changed the 9 capacitor (courtesy of Andyrfaz) as he recommended. Toppy seemed bit more stable for a couple of weeks but is now falling apart.
In an effort to eliminate faults I was wondering if I can make a straight swap of the HDs between the a spare 5800 and the 5810 or am I being a bit naive.
Any advice would be much appreciated. |

It's probably unconnected but I just built a 5810 up with SATA>IDE adaptor and had VF&F, freezes with the exclamation mark on the display etc. Like the previous one I had, the fix for me was swapping their cut IDE cable with a short straight through one I had kicking around. It seems very sensitive to the cable length, I first tried it on the long ends of the cable ~ 30cm and had same issues. Used the middle plug in the cable so it was about 10cm and the problems vanished. Cut the cable to length, all working fine.
Maybe my adaptor puts out low voltages but thought it was worth mentioning. |

Once the PSU is repaired, there are other possible causes of those symptoms:
The disk may have been corrupted as the PSU capacitors were failing. Connecting the HDD to a PC running TopfHDRW/Doctor may fix this. If not, the next step is a reformat.
The 5810 is very prone to crashing if there are duplicate channels or if the channel list has not been pruned by deleting unwanted channels (pay, porn, shopping etc.). |

Thanks for your replies.
As 'sods law' would have it, tried the 5100 this morning before I started pulling it apart and no faults at all showed up. Tried all sorts of function checks including powering down a couple of times and it worked impecably the whole time.
Cant repair it if it aint broke so will have to wait til it gets a bad day!
Will let you know how I gert on. |

| If it is failing capacitors, they will not mend themselves. Best get them changed as a preventative measure before the power supply does some more expensive damage. |

I changed the capacitors a couple of weeks ago as stated at the start of this thread.
PS Update. Used the Toppy extensively last night and again this morning and still no sign of any malfunctions. Siiiiigh |

Sorry, I read thisandyfras wrote: Once the PSU is repaired, there are other possible causes of those symptoms: {snip}. and took it to mean the repair had yet to be done. |
