Currently, my TV is a Sony KV-32HX15 32" CRT monster that is a two man lift. I am looking to buy an up to date TV but I want to avoid the problem that I had just before I bought the Sony.

Initially, I bought a 32" Toshiba from Amazon, however on connecting it to the Toppy I found that the TV remote clashed with the Toppy remote. I therefore had to return it to Amazon and buy from a local shop that would allow me to test the Toppy remote on the TV in the shop.

I am now the happy owner of some Amazon gift vouchers. I am therefore looking for information about makes and models to avoid, and also recommendations of makes and models to consider that are known to work with a TF5800.

My budget can probably stretch to 700 for the right TV.
Size should be 40" to 42".
I am not bothered about the sound quality of the TV's speakers because I run the audio through a 5.1 AV receiver.
I have a USB-powered Buffalo MiniStation 1TB hard drive; it would be preferable if the TV could successfully read data from it (my father-in-law's TV can't read it but can read a memory stick).
An onboard Freeview HD receiver would also be good.
I have no set views on whether it should LCD, LED or plasma.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

I would be looking for a Panasonic plasma at that size. Not quite up to date on what's around atm.

I've just bought an LG 42LV550 LED Smart TV for ~500. I'm very happy with it.

No issues with the Toppy remote codes.

The only niggle that I have is some white clipping on the Toppy picture which cannot be fixed by adjusting the contrast. I'm going to try attenuating the RGB scart signals slightly by modifying a scart lead. I've seen the same problem with a Samsung LCD TV. It's as though the incoming scart signal is overloading the input circuitry.

Most big names (Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Philips) use their own IR protocol for remote signals that won't clash with the Toppy. Toshiba seems to be the only big-name exception. LG uses a similar protocol but differnet device numbers and the LG TV's I've seen so far don't clash with the Toppy.

There is a big library of remote control codes on the JP1 website here. Look up the TV (or a similar model number) that you are interested in and if there is a file with RM next to it then download that file and open it in a text editor. Near the top of the file (about line 8 ) you will see the "protocol" of the IR signal. The Toppy 5800 uses NEC1, Device 32 and the Toppy 5810 uses NEC1, Device 2, Subdevice 52. Few other devices use theses exact codes but it seems that certain Toshibas use something close enough to clash.

Many thanks for all the replies.

Having looked at Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic, I am leaning towards a Panasonic TX-P42GT30B (676.80 from Amazon).

There don't seem to be any remote codes for this model on the JP1 site, nor for any TX models posted in the last year. Can anyone confirm that a Panny in the current range works Ok with a Toppy TF5800?

I have a Panasonic TX-P50GT30B, and have not had any issues using it with my TF5800 and Toppy remote at all.
