| I just used a pair of thin-nosed pliers to pull out the pin from the plug. No disassembly needed. |

ok, all was fine last night, dvd scart and toppy via rgb.
this morning i have removed pin 8 at the TV END of the scart lead, not trying to questioning the TV END bit but just wondered if toppy was still sending via pin8 and the tv is not receiving it could this cause a problem at the toppy end.
now running like this today and see how it goes.
tippy...........
edit: i have just noticed something in system settings that may or may not have anything to do with the issues ive been having.
system settings > A/V output setting > TV type was set to multi and not PAL.
could this have been the cause of my problems.

It doesn't matter which end of the lead you remove / cut the pin.
Having the TV set to multi rather than PAL should not cause a problem AFAIK.
And I have been running without a Pin 8 for several years with no problems I can pin (sic) on it not being there. |

thanks gomez,
the first cheap sealed scart i messed up but the reasonable quality one i was able to open it and pull the wire from the pin hole/slot.
i have not actually removed the pin itself but it is disconnected with a small piece of tape around the wire, is this ok.

Should be. Those old, cheap / free SCART leads bundled with kit do have a use for trying this out on before you butcher your Monster. |

well touch wood and all that but since before 11am it has been just fine.
i honestly thought it wouldnt make a difference but as always im prepared to try what is recommended.
still seems odd to me after 4 years with the same combo that now it causes a problem.
as you can tell i know very little about this stuff but is there any link to the capacitors i had replaced last august.
one other thing there are 2 scart sockets on the back of the toppy is there a way of using the video one and still get the same functionality as i get now.
i will report back in 48hrs or so.
thanks for all the advice and very quick replies.

all was completely normal last night.
this morning the sound was on as normal then faded to no sound. i jiggled the scart toppy end and it is now fine.
the scart wasnt loose and if i jiggle it again it will cause the sound too drop out.
when i say jiggle these were very small movements, and the pin removal was tv end of scart lead.

| SCART connectors are the worst ever in the electronics industry. A fully wired cable with screening is quite thick, heavy & rigid and the plugs are a flimsy fit with no locking arrangement. As you have found the slightest movement can break a connection. |

thanks bizman,
so your saying dont worry about this then?.

edit: can the video scart connector on the toppy be used in anyway instead of the tv scart, just in case the fault is on the toppy tv scart socket itself. |

| It can be used but only carries the worst quality composite video output. The best RGB video out is only found on the TV SCART socket. Also AFAIK you can't control the volume on the video SCART since it is fixed level for recording onto a VCR or DVD recorder. |

hi,
my problems have returned although not exactly the same.
the tv now randomly switches from toppy to tv and then turns itself off and on again.
ive spoken via email to the chap who replaced the capacitors.
he has suggested trying to connect the toppy via phono leads with a scart adapter.
im not certain what he means but assume he means red, white and from the toppy directly to the same on the tv or red, white yellow from toppy too a scart adapter then then the relevant scart on the tv, am i getting this correct.
as anyone else tried this.
the chap is not suggesting it is a cure more just another way of testing the toppy.
tippy.............
edit: i am wondering if this could be used both ways around ie: scart end in tv plugs in toppy and vice versa, would this partially test both scart sockets.
