Hi, My 5810 remote is becoming very unresponsive especially the direction keys, i have to press some of them very hard to get them to work.
Before i try and open the remote is there actually anything i can do to make it work better ie clean wirh cotton buds/Alcohol etc
Thanks |

Try new batteries?
Make sure you are pointing remote at the set (it is easy to point it off line when one gets annoyed with it!). Check whether or not the light on the front of the toppy flashes when a key is pressed. You can also check whether or not the remote is transmitting the problem keys.
Also see here for checking with a camera
[edit]Might also be a good idea to power it off at the wall for two minutes to give it a proper reset[/edit]

Thanks Geoff, unfortunately i've tried those.
The light on the front of the toppy flashes & can be seen with the camera but i have to use quite a lot of pressure on the arrow & ok keys compared to a light press of most other keys.
I think its just wear & tear on those buttons and hoped it could be fixed with a quick contact clean or somthing.
Is there any screws on the remote to remove or do i just try to prise it appart. |

Try googling for "site:toppy.org.uk open remote"
The first I found was this (might be a good idea to look at some other results)

@ Geoff Good idea but all the info & Pics(that still work) seem to be for the 5800 remote not the 5810.
@ Jumbo I've got some spare silver paste(from when i fitted the cpu/heatsink will this do.
Not sure about that knife he's using to open the remote I'd like to keep my fingers in one piece |

I decided to buy a remote and found this site"www.genuinecopies.tv" there not original or one for all remotes but copies which come pre programmed for the toppy.
A lot of the buttons are the same as the original and the others are explaned in the instructions which came with the remote.
I ordered a 5800 for £11.99 & 5810 for £10.99.
The 5800 is not as good a build quality as the original but works ok.
The 5810 seems to be a better build quality than the original.
Left is 5800 right is 5810

| You could have bought a harmony (300) for the same (total) price and several times the quality and functionality! |

Complete overkill. The OP will probably find the that sweat from fingers, gunge from food etc. has got between the rubber membrane and the circuit board.
Dismantling the component parts, washing them under under a cold running tap, perhaps a with single drop of washing up liquid, and letting everything dry before re-assembly will work in 99.99% of cases. The "switch" material doesn't wear away - it's just the gunge forms an insulating layer. |

Most people I know who have had problems with unresponsive remote keys- don't have sweaty handers/fingers
- don't handle their remotes using grubby hands
- don't have such remotes that allow for any of the above or other "gunge", if at all present, to lodge themselves between the rubber pad and the circuit board (an almost impossible scenario)!
Why "Overkill" anyway? Too expensive, too time-consuming, too difficult?! I think not. |

Yes but when i cut it in half so my sister can use it on her 5800, she'll probably want to use some of the buttons on my half. |

Could this explain the lack of response from your original remote? |

Now that you mention it |

Unless they wash their hands everytime before using a remote and it is kept in a airtight box between usage then capillary action will draw in any moisture to the most unlikely of places

Too likely to damage a remote that can be salvaged more easily. The solvents in silver paint can react with the rubber membrane. the paint makes the area more rigid and can reduce the clearance that is required to turn the button off. |
