I have recently purchased a SONY Internet TV and have managed to wirelessly stream music/photos/video from my PC and Laptop. The TV will play mpeg and avi files, but not .rec files (even renamed .mpg, which I had to do for the TV to see them): my question is, what is the minimum conversion that I would have to do to get them to play on the TV?
This is not of great importance, but you know how it is when you get a new bit of kit, you like to play. |

You could try TFRECtoTS
http://www.pauljonathan.eclipse.co.uk/index.htm
After converting the rec file rename file extension to mpg and your telly should play them. Hopefully |

Is the file still on Toppy when you're trying to play it, or have you copied it somewhere? It's not clear from your post. If the former, I'd guess it's the connection rather than the file type that's likely to be the issue.

| The TV will not be able to view the contents of the Toppy as the Toppy doesn't support DLNA. OP must have copied them somewhere, hence my suggestion for the PC tool. |

Not having much luck so far. I have the .rec file on my PC (which plays Ok on VLC and Windows Media Player), I then convert it to .rec.ts OK (which still plays on VLC, but not on WMP), but it all goes wrong when I change the extension to .mpg: I get a strangled whining sound from my HDD and the explorer window locks up, or it doesn't lock up but if I try to play it either VLC or WMP lock up.
What am I doing wrong? |

Not sure you are doing anything wrong. Trouble is I don't know why you're getting that strange sound and inability to play in WMP.
It's alsways just worked for me. Granted I've not used it in a while, but I've never had any issues with it.
Hopefully we'll get someone along who can explain 'cause I'm not out of my depth. |

| I think that the HDD sound is probably the heads hunting, very rapidly, over a short distance, so it ends up like a buzz. I might try again today and try to be a bit more diagnostic (I know what it is like being on the receiving end of poor fault reports). |

| I use soniclife's rec2mpg scripts. works fine for me. I do the conversion on my PC, the resulting mpg is automatically backed up to a linkstation running twonky, which can be seen by the sony tv |
