Hi All
I am probably going to have to get a new laptop soon, as the one I use at the moment (for all tap development and all non-iPad based stuff) is on its last legs I think.
In all probability, any new laptop will be Windows 7 based, unless I make a lot of effort to ensure otherwise.
I have read the forums about getting Altair to run on 64 bit Windows, but has anyone got any experience of installing the tap compiler tools etc and getting them to work on 64bit W7, or should it all just work as expected?
I also use FileZilla and other FTP tools to access the toppy which I imagine should all just work as currently.
Also, I have never used W7 before (work is going to upgrade soon, so it won't be long). Anyone have any first hand experience of the different flavours? New laptops seem to have Home Premium installed, rather than any of the Professional versions. Is that going to be any good, or is it ones of those things that would drive any technically minded users mad?
I know I could read reviews of these sort of things, but the opinion of like minded people who develop in the same area is going to be more helpful I reckon.
Thanks |

Hi bob
I use alsorts of (32bit) software without issue (filezilla inc) on W7 Ultimate & Home Pre.
You have the compatability option so any program expecting an older os can be made to work (mostly).
Command prompt is still there (although for some opperations i do need to run it as admin)
Differences between Ultimate & H.P.
H.P. can't directly run an xp VM.
H.P. no bitlocker encrytion built in
Ulti. switch between 35 languages?
H.P. no Domain Join (login on to company networks)
H.P. no network backup option.
So not really a great deal...... |

I'd stick with home premium unless you need domain login. The ultimate features aren't really worth the extra money, especially as there are free equivalents.
For Bitlocker, you use Truecrypt.
For XP Mode, use Virtual PC or the superior (faster, more traditional UI) Virtual Box and and build your own XP VM.
The only compatibility problems on I've had on W7 32 bit is with hardware, specifically a couple of old TV cards (used for a feed from the Toppy RF out) and an old scanner. |

Thanks both. Sounds like any readily available laptop would be ok then.
I'll start looking around and online soon.

This Sony (AMD triple-core/6GB/500GB/BluRay combo/W7 64HP) is what I just bought for £480.
(The price varies every few days at that vendor but they've re-stocked several times too). |

Whatever you get try a dual-boot Linux/Win 7configuration. Go for a well known and supported 64-bit Linux OS (I like OpenSuse) and give it a try. Everything works better, faster and is FREE! I have a Sony Vaio which is a well spec'd and built machine but has to be hacked to get into the BIOS (if you need to do that of course), has to have Sony versions of many hardware drivers (such as Nvidia) which is annoying, is pig slow compared to Linux and comes with a bloody slow, buggy and frequently crashing/freezing Win 7 Pro applications. As mentioned Virtualbox is great although you may find support for more esoteric hardware lacking. All 64-bit operating systems seem to lack full/comprehensive support for hardware drivers |

Thanks. The laptop has started to behave a bit better, and I have found an external drive and taken backups of all the important parts, so it is now less urgent. No doubt I will come back to this thread when i decide it is too risky to continue with the current machine.
