Just bought a MacBook Pro (yeh, really spoiling ourselves Very Happy ), installed MPEG Streamclip (1.9.2) and ported over the MPEG2 QT component.

Connected to Toppy 5800 via USB - and Altair is showing Files and Turbo greyed out. Connected it to the G5 (same cable) and they are operational. It's almost certainly an operator error, but I'd be most grateful if someone can give me a clue as to what the heck it is I'm doing wrong. Embarassed

Thanks in advance.

You need to have the "Enable Altair" box checked in the Preferences.

Also, for Snow Leopard, you'd probably be better off with the beta, 1.9.3b3. See the Squared5 site for details.

Update... First of all I used Software Update to make sure the MacBook's system was up to date, then downloaded and installed the 1.9.3b3 MPEG Streamclip, but we've had flaky results. The Toppy sometimes locks up when we're downloading (switch off at wall, restart), and some downloads are nearly completed when they suddenly return a "Read error" message.

We have a lot going on at present so we'll go back to running the USB lead down the stairs to the study and use the G5 for the time being.

Thanks again for the help

Exactly how long is your USB cable? That could be an issue.

Yeah, I get that too. I think it helps to reboot the toppy before I do transfers, but I may be being superstitious. It mostly seems to work.

How's the sound? Have you made a mpeg and played it back using QT? There were 'issues' with the mpeg2 component.

Doctor: It's actually shorter with the laptop, since it's in the same room. And it's one of the Active USB cables used for the longer run, so I'm as sure as I can be it's not a cable problem. Going back to the old system we still have no problems (touch wood!!!!!)

PeteY: We'll try your reboot method and see if that works for us. Haven't tried making an mpeg from the new one yet - reckon we'll concentrate on trying to get the transfer problems sorted first Smile
Hopefully the post-beta Streamclip may solve it. The QT mpeg2 component... I just dragged and dropped from the G5 and that seems to work. It didn't come up with an error message though I was half expecting it to

Updating this thread (at last!)

This week I checked Squared5 and found a new version, 1.9.3b4 beta (released in August). Downloaded it yesterday and did a test run, moving a batch from Toppy to MacBook. Success. With the previous beta, you could set up a batch, and it would download the first one but then you would see all the other "waiting" labels change to "Read error" in quick succession and the Toppy would lock up. I'm not all that techie, but I guess the lock-up must come first.

So further thanks to developer Stefano. Smile

Edit to add: Sorry - forgot to say thanks to previous posters for their input. Thanks.

There, I've said it now Very Happy

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I still see the problem with 1.9.3b4. It's intermittent, now as before. It's a bit annoying.

You imply you are using an active USB cable from the laptop to the toppy.

These are normally used to increase the length the cable to 10m using one active and one passive cable, I would have expected you to use the passive cable from the laptop to the toppy (I am using Windows <--> active cable <--> passive cable <--> toppy)

Also, it could still be a cable issue even though it works from the G5 - your laptop hardware circuits may not be as tolerant. Suggest trying another cable (take from a printer or borrow from someone to test?).

Re the transfer locking up, check that the toppy file names are valid on a mac (this may not apply to a mac; for windows it is usually a ':' that causes the problem but there are also a few other characters)

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff - I've tried various permutations of cable. The arrangement is like this - each Toppy and the iMac has this set-up permanently:

iMac     <---> active USB 2.0 lead
Toppy 1<---> standard 2.0 lead <---> +active lead
Toppy 2<---> standard 2.0 lead

Each connection is completed as necessary with a temporary active lead. The arrangement has worked perfectly with both Toppies and the G5 (running 10.4.11) for well over two years.

The laptop, however, remains inconsistent. It certainly didn't like the long-lead arrangement; connecting directly to each Toppy by the standard lead alone led to partial success, but it's still not reliable - I can't just start a batch download and leave it to get on with it as I can with the G5.

Certainly, the problem seems to have lessened with the latest beta release of Streamclip, so everything seems to point to that, especially taking into account PeteY's posts. Smile

I'll send a message to Squared5 later with as much info as I can to see if it helps confirm a software problem. Wink

For the sake of data points, I also have a macbook Pro, and I only use a standard lead, no power. I think it was OK before Snow leopard, but I can't be sure.
