This test firmware is now available from the Member's Only downloads area of the site, with the file name 5800PVR-TEST-21-06-2007-5.13.59.zip.

It offers a good stability improvement over other recent firmwares with regard to crashes caused by the BBC MHEG (interactive) service, and should prove stable for most people in normal use.

Note, however, that the memory leak that causes the crash has not been completely banished - if you leave your PVR unattended on a BBC channel for some hours, it may still crash.

In testing by the beta-test team, the memory appears to be cleared up when TAPs are activated, or when the Guide is viewed, so in normal viewing, it should prove much better than recent versions, including 5.13.40, and it will also work fine on IT (Teletext) interactive services.

To download the file, click the Toppy.org.uk logo at the top of the screen, and from the front page of the site, sign in to Your Tools if you aren't signed in already.

You will find the firmware in the Member only downloads area of the site.

Nigel.

Have any of the beta testers applied patches to this firmware and does it Axel?

Cheers,

Ray D

Yes, some of them have applied patches; I can't remember which ones they mentioned, but I'm sure someone will be along soon to say. And I don't see any reason why it shouldn't Axel.

FWPatcher says it cannot install R2-D2's Timer patch 2b, as it's not intended for this firmware.

I tried R2D2s T2b and was told it would not be applied. Are you sure it didn't patch the others and leave that one out...

Glen.

Thanks - I didn't realise R2-D2 was so efficient Smile

Is it my imagination or does the new firmware use "less" memory than all previous versions? (with MHEG disabled)

Also the remote control response seems more snappy than before!

I've upgarded just to test functionality other than MHEG.

@Nigel,
As a matter of interest, those poor souls with no access to, use or knowledge of, PCs/firmwares/this forum/etc must be at a loss with the BBC MHEG problem Rolling Eyes What solution do they have available to them? Does the standard Toppy documentation provide a reference to this site? Do vendors know about this site or provide a free firmware upgrade service?

I think most non-web people would either put up with it if it's out of warranty and curse at the thing every time it did it eventually replacing it (as it's "gone wrong" Rolling Eyes )
or they would return to the retailer for them to sort who hopefully would update it for them (If it was me I would and do)

fast remote sounds interesting - I'll give it a try at least

New firmware released on the 4th of July. Coincidence ? I think not....

Independance Day it is then, or shall we just call it Yankee ?
