Hi there. Just purchased Topfield TF5800 on Ebay, very happy with it. However, I can't connect it to my laptop, which is running Windows 8 (64bit). Downloaded the files from website but my laptop won't recognise the device at all. I can't find a download specific to installing the correct drivers for the device. I'd be grateful for any help or pointers to the correct links/files to solve this problem. Thank you.

Hello,

My father has the TF5800 black panther which just before Christmas went on holiday to Andy Fraser for overhaul. It also had a disk upgrade using Western Digital WD20EARS 2TB and Startech IDE to SATA Adapter. Been working perfectly for > 6 months now with Mystuff 6.4

Two days ago it started recycling on boot - displaying c456, Run, P001, c456 etc. "verifying files" then recycles again. Seems to recycle even before Mystuff loaded.

Holding down 0 doesn't prevent this.

I suspect the hard disk as a) 5 other disks in same unit work correctly. b) disk in another toppy displays recycling symptoms above. I have no reason to suspect any further electrical degradation as the unit functions with/without other disk. I'm not an electronics guru though!

I have tried topfhdrw program with disk in an external caddy - disk spins up, is recognised by windows (wants to format it but I know not to do this) but doesnt display in topfhdfw.

Its no biggie to simply fit another disk but I was wondering if there was any way to rescue the contents of whats on the u/s drive? I don't have a lot of skills with disk architecture but I do have sata > usb connectors, linux and gcc compilers and a few windows boxes and willing to try.

Any pointers appreciated, even if to say I'm wasting my time!
Thanks for the site!
TAPs :: Simple file manager source code?

Hi

I'm testing a new version of MacTF which Nathan Oates kindly tweaked for me. Very occasionally I'm getting a corrupted file while uploading videos to the Toppy.

I want to be able to run a CRC or MD5 check on each file I upload, to compare with the file on my Mac. It looks like FireBird has an MD5 function in his library. But I don't have the skills to write a whole file manager TAP around that.

Is there a simple file manager TAP, with source code, that I could butcher? It only needs to be very simple, just allow me to move through the file system and eg hit OK to run an MD5 check. I can do the "hit OK -> MD5 -> display results on an OSD" bit, but not the "moving through filesystem" bit

Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks all

My TF5800 has worked well until a few days ago. There are two problems, probably connected to each other.

1. It suddenly displays the menu and you can't exit from that at all. You have to do an install, which then makes it work for a few hours. It dumps all of the timer settings but it's not the end of the world to set those again. Clearly something is wrong, but I have no idea what it is or how to go about fixing it.

2. Yesterday evening when I switched it on, it kept reloading and was completely unresponsive. This morning I was able to do do a reinstall, as described above.

I've tried unplugging the device etc., but that doesn't help at all.

My software version is TF-NPT 5.13.65T. Is it the end of the line for this machine?

Subject: Problems playing .rec files on a Panasonic TV
Topic Replies: 10

I have no idea which section to put this in as it partly fits into 3.

I have a new Panasonic TV with all the Smart bells and whistles. As I already have a NAS with a DLNA server on it (Twonky) and a number of rec files archived off on it, I have been playing to see what works (a bad pun I know).

I found, to my surprise, that if I take a recording from BBC1 from the Toppy and rename it to .ts and put it where Twonky can see it, then the TV will just play it over the network! Brilliant.

Then things started getting a bit more complicated. I found anything that is recorded from BBC3 with the recording starting before the channel starts for the day confuses it, so I have ignored those for now. That doesn't particularly surprise me as some software I have can't cope either.

More importantly I have had problems with all recordings from non-BBC channels that I have tried so far. I've yet to go through all channels to find a definite pattern, but all the recordings from other channels that I have tried will not play over DLNA. However, if I put them on a USB stick then the TV plays them perfectly.

I've checked the help for the TV and it claims that the DLNA player will play transport stream files with MPEG2 video and audio, so it should cover any .rec file the Toppy can throw at it as far as I can see from that.

I have also tried a couple of the programs people have come up with on here for stripping off the rec header and they make absolutely no difference to the results. It seems to be the transport stream itself that the TV is having trouble with.

So, I emailed Panasonic explaining it all and suggesting (as politely as I can) that I may have found a bug in the DLNA player. I have even given them a couple of 3 minute recordings - one from BBC1 which works and one from PickTV (I picked a channel at random) which doesn't. A helpful chap has been trying them.

What he is currently telling me is that the recording that doesn't work must have DRM on it. I have explained to him where it came from and that the Toppy has no concept of DRM itself. I said I have never heard of freeview SD broadcasts having DRM, but he is convinced that they have DRM giving rights to play from local storage but preventing streaming over the network. I'm fairly sure he is guessing, but want to know more details to respond to him.

Firstly, does anyone know for certain that Freeview SD does/doesn't have any support for DRM or any current use of it?

Secondly, any ideas of what technical differences there are in the streams for the different channels that could trip up the player app in the TV? Or any ideas of things to try/test to narrow it down?
_________________
Cheers,
Rowan.

Subject: Updated firmware - MS Power Off not working
Topic Replies: 20

Since I have had playback problems with my replacement TF5700HDMI after my main box died (see this thread) I updated the firmware to 3.17 even though I know that the memory manager in that series is bad.
This change seems to have solved the playback issue but today I found another problem:
The toppy was set via MyStuff to Power Off at 04:00, but it was still running when I got up this morning.
Furthermore the display cycled between "OFF" and the current time etc (I run TF5000Display).
When I tried to get into the MyStuff EPG it showed the native EPG as if MyStuff was not running.
However TAPCommander showed MyStuff in the list of running TAP:s....

I have just updated my signature to contain the actual patches reported by MyInfo in case someone can spot a conflict with the MyStuff PowerOff function and the patches.
I have no clue as to what I should do next to get this working, so any hints are welcome.

I just did a factory reset and follow-up configuration of the Toppy including channel search etc because I did a f/w update from patched 2.84 to patched 3.17 a couple of days ago without the reset. But I don't know if that did any good.

The memory leak is very obvious, with this f/w the available memory starts out at 12.6 Mb but in a few minutes is reduced to 11.6 and yesterday I found that it had gone down to 8.2 Mb. With f/w 2.84 it stays constant at 12.2 or so...

I changed the power supply capacitors on my TF5800, updated the firmware and installed MyStuff.

Did a few test recordings and everything seemed OK.

A few days later, I switched on the TF5800 and had a message inviting me to reformat the hard drive. I responded with 'Cancel'. The unit proceeded to work but I could no longer record programs and also seemed to have lost all the TAPs.

So I reformatted the drive set up the TAPs again and did a few test recordings. All OK.

About two weeks later, the same thing happened again: the 'Reformat' message and all recordings and TAPs lost.

I was going to try changing the hard drive. Would this be a reasonable first step to try?

Hi I'm a new member although ive had my Toppy for about 5 years now I have just had my first problem with it, the playback of some recordings sometimes jump or freeze. Ive read the posts about this fault and have checked the voltages they seem to be within spec (all the capacitors are black ones), so i decided to fit a fan as descibed in some of the posts this is now working but when I switch to standby the fan is still running, its conected to the 12v supply with a resistor in to slow it down.
Is this normal and if so is there a solution, would connecting to the 5v supply without a resistor do the trick or is it better not to use the 5v side.

The disc in my 5800 went faulty. I managed to get it to run long enough to copy ProgramFiles off. I replaced the disc and copied ProgramFiles back. Mystuff is running as it was before. However I have lost all the recordings that were on the disc. Which files that reference the non-existant recordings can I delete?

ok it's the inlaws toppy , nothing would work , just froze.
so I've replaced the main 6 caps.
reformat the box.
only tap is mystuff using the 6.4 installer
when the toppy boots up it just shows the program info bar and is completly froze.
if I start with no taps running, it all seams ok.
I have replaced my stuff tap file but this did'nt solve anything.

After a long and happy (mainly) toppy experience, we've decided to go modern and get a Pure Avalon. So I would like to dispose of the following as a pair:

Silver 5800PVR: at the last count a couple of years ago it had PSU problem-lke issues. It comes with an andyfras PSU repair kit that I never quite got round to using. A good number of years old - bought about when I joined this splendid forum.

Black 5800PVRt: Bought from Turbosat on ebay when the first one became dodgy. This had its PSU mended by andyfras a couple of years ago but then started being cranky again. It's final failure prompted the recent switch out of toppy.

I can arrange shipping - make me an offer, assuming I pay the shipping.

My eldest has got to the point where he can read and wants to use the remote to select a recording to watch instead of asking mum or dad to do it.

We have organised programs into folders to make it easy to find something and he can do that however we need a way to prevent him from viewing anything which is not within his folder (i.e. anything that might be inappropriate for a 5 year old).

I assume I could go through every recording we have on the box and set a locked flag however , when I or my wife are watching recordings, it would be irritating to have to enter the unlock code every time we chose a recording.

It would therefore be perfect if it was possible to lock access to specific folders while leaving his folder unlocked. Does anyone know if this is possible and how I could do it?

MyStuff :: Timer for same channel/same time slot every weekday?

Is it possible to set a record timer for the same channel/same timeslot every day (eg. Radio 4 18:30 to 19:00 Monday to Friday) regardless of the title or genre of the programme being transmitted?

I've tried setting a WeekDays timer in the native Toppy timers menu. It will set ok provided that I accept the deletion of any specific-programme-name-search timers previously set by MyStuff for that channel/timeslot. But the WeekDays timer then gets deleted by MyStuff, which reinstates just the specific-programme-name-search timers for that channel/timeslot.

I want to keep those specific-programme-name-searches (because they aren't restricted to that channel/timeslot) but nevertheless record R4 18:30 to 19:00 every weekday regardless of whether or not it might be captured by some other specific search.

Is this possible? If so, how do I do it?

Thanks

Charlie

TAPs :: Front panel time played/to play display?

I have been looking through the TAPs list to see if there is one which will cause the front panel to display the time in minutes that a recording has been playing, or has to play, but cannot see anything. I wonder if anyone knows of one which I missed.

Mind you, I suppose such a display would probably get confused when playing chained recordings via MyStuff so perhaps it was not practical to create such a thing.

new problem today.

first, switching on toppy it started going in an endless cycle as the epg loaded, telling me "out of memory: 111" and then rebooting.

i held the '0' button on one of the restarts to bypass mystuff, and the first time i managed to get to the original toppy file screen. looking at this i saw that the last two recordings (earlier today) were showing 0Mb. the disc itself had a reasonable amount of space left on it (around 20% of a 400Gb).

anyway, from the toppy display, i deleted the two 'zero byte' files, and then i tried a restart again.

this time, it didn't even try to load mystuff, instead just going to the file and folder verify routine. it sits on this for a while with the dotted line running from left to right as normal, but then after around 30 seconds, it freezes, both the background tv channel coming in and the dotted line.

after looking through the forums, i tried disconnecting the aerial and power for a while, and then reconnected power and tried a start-up with no aerial.

verify routine over a black screen still stalls after around half a minute.

not sure what to try next.
