Is there a TAP/patch to allow the old TF5800 remote to control a TF5810?

The buttons on the newer remote are all so small and evenly placed and so MUCH harder to get used to in the dark!

Hi - hope this is OK to post - I have a silver Toppy 5800 160Gb for sale - full working order (oroginal box, cables, remote etc). I have quiet fans installed, so not had any over heat issues. Also used to have a 1Tb drive installed (now removed) - so still have the IDE-Sata adapter and replacement IDE cable available, happy to include these. Looking for £50.

Wondering why my Toppy didn't record it, but given the subject they clearly pulled it and showed an old episode in its place
You'd think the BBC would have the balls to actually put a comment on their website? - the series DVD launch has also had to be postponed.

Presumably it will be shown later in the year?

I have a 5810, a Panasonic Viera TV, a Philips VCR and a JVC DVD player. I have connected them all up using co-axial, scart cables and HDMI connection for the PVR. They all work OK and can record and playback. However I mostly use the 5810 and it is irritating when I am in the middle of watching a TV program and the PVR switches on to record a program that I have previously set up, it then changes the TV to the last channel the PVR was set to.

Is there any way that this can be prevented. Is it the way I have wired it all up? I want to continue watching the TV program without interruption and the PVR to record its program without switching the TV to the PVR AV channel.

Can anyone help?
I'm currently trying to get MyStuff copied to and working on a WD10EARS.

Although this isn't directly related to my issue (it doesn't fix it, anyway) while investigating my issue I've come across ADF on the western digital drives http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Format
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=120#tab10
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/WhitePapers/ENG/2579-771430.pdf

To summarise, the WD10EARS 'out of the box' uses 4k physical sectors, instead of the usual 512byte sectors.

This is now pretty standard across the WD range, and as far as I can tell other manufacturers are doing it too.

The WD disks (and probably others) have a jumper that allows you to set the disk to emulate 512byte sectors at the disk interface, while actual still using the underlying 4k physical sectors.
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/1679#jumperRefered to on the WD disks as achieving full performance on xp, as xp fails to align its writes with the larger sectors degrading performance.

So...

Does anyone have any idea on what these 4k sectors will do to a toppy?
From what I can gather, lots of others are using wd10ears, and I can't find any reference to anyone using the jumper.

Opinions, etc, gladly received.

Topic Replies: 5

Hi,
I posted on this board a while ago when I was experiencing a picture breakup problem (that thread here: http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18820 ).
I had the PSU replaced (which was good to do as a matter of course, from the looks of a lot of the problems reported here), but the problem remained. I replaced the hard drive, and it was (and has been, since) fine.
However, the drive is a really noisy old IDE drive, which is only 20-30gb (from memory - I haven't checked).

I've tried using TAPs to change the acoustic settings of the drive, but it remains noisy. It's just old, I think.
I think I've grown to like only having that 30gb of space, as it makes me watch/delete things, instead of storing up hundreds of hours of TV to lose when my hard drive develops a fault (a problem experienced by me once already, as well as my Humax and Sky+ friends, alike), and the Topfield has a USB data transfer rate somewhere between "it STILL isn't finished?" and "has it actually crashed or has it.. oh..no..it is still going", so I'll never get around to copying stuff off and backing it up properly elsewhere.

So is it worth converting to SATA?
Especially as some of you suggest the green/eco/slower speed options are quieter, cheaper, etc. and better designed for PVR use, than faster, more expensive (and noisier) drives.
I'm also a little put off by the suggestion (in the sata ide sticky thread) that you need to drill extra holes in things?

Then the actual drive choice seems a minefield. Is there an obvious way to know whether a drive will or won't work (a certain spec that the Topfield needs), or is it just a hope-for-the-best situation, if it isn't confirmed working by another forum member?
Ironically, the cheapest PATA drive I found on the first supplier I went to, was £65.. £28 more than the cheapest SATA drive (would be cheaper to buy a SATA and adapter, surely?). Are they generally more expensive than SATA these days? (It has been a long time since I've dabbled in IT components).
The cheapest drive of "any" kind I found was this SSD drive. http://www.ebuyer.com/284751-ocz-30gb-strata-msata-ssd-sata-ii-read-125mb-s-write-40mb-s-str-msata-30g - as hardly any of these seem to have been tested, I'd be wary. I've never used an SSD drive, but if I don't need the extra capacity offered by PATA/SATA, any reason not to? It would certainly be quiet.

Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi folks,

I'm bringing this over to Firmwares, enhancements and upgrades from the MyStuff thread, as it's probably more apropriate here.

I've just bought a new WD10EARS 1tb disk because I need more space. I've formated it in the toppy (connected with the turbosat pata-sata bridge adapter), plugged it in an xp pc along with the original (manufacturer installed disk), and copied everything I could from the old disk to the new disk (The original disk had a few folders at the very top level that I couldn't copy, but they were empty apart form a 0 byte .lnk file).

When I then put the new disk back in the toppy it goes into a constant boot loop until it hits a vf&f. If I interupt the boot loop using 0, everything looks there. If I try and fire up MyStuff it reboots.

Any ideas?

Some extra detail in case it makes a difference:
topfHDRW version 0.2 with the topfHDRW patches applied that firebird released a month or so ago.

I notice that when I have the new wd10ears drive in the PC topfhdrw tells me I have two disks in Disk1 and Disk 3. Selecting Disk 3 the program tells me it has lost connection to the disk and shuts down.

I get this on the new disk from Topfield HDDoctor:
The only other thing that stands out to me as a possible cause is that the WD10EARS has a jumper for use on XP. Given this is being copied on an XP machine, but isn't an XP disk.... Any idea of the jumper should be on or off?

Computer connections :: Dying toppy hard drive?

My toppy was recently developing problems proably due to dodgy PSU which has been sent off to get fixed.

I thought as i had my toppy open I would get my recordings off the hard drive, while the PSU is being repaired.

However i have a problem, when i put it into a caddy the drive sounds like it is starting to spin up, but then stalls and starts spinning up again.
Is it dead? It was working fine inside the toppy before i took the drive out.....
and other drives work fine withing the caddy.

I guess all i can do is wait for the PSU to come back reassemble and hope it still works inside the toppy and transfer all the data off using USB?

Just wondering if i should be ordering a new hard drive to replace the current one.

Are there any known issues copying MyStuff from one disk to another with TopfHDRW?

I've just bought a new WD10EARS 1tb disk, formated it in the toppy (connected with the turbosat pata-sata bridge adapter), plugged it in an xp pc along with the original (manufacturer installed disk), and copied everything from the old disk to the new disk.

When I then put the new disk back in the toppy it goes into a constant boot loop until it hits a vf&f. If I interupt the boot loop using 0, everything looks there. If I try and fire up MyStuff it reboots.

Any ideas? Or am I missing something/is this not possible?

MyStuff :: MyStuff - Feature Request/Suggestion

A lot of the time, I find myself using an appropriate Power Search to capture all recordings for a particular series, to build up a full "library" of all episodes (for later copy to offline storage).

NCIS is a case in point.

However, I often find it difficult to separate out the programmes into their respective seasons, so I can file them approprately.

It would be really useful if "Autofile" had an option to append the series CRID to the folder name, so most of this work would be done automatically.

Possible? Useful? What do people think?

Any chance of this appearing in a future release??
